Living in Buda, TX: A Local Realtor's Honest Take
First, the important stuff: it's pronounced "BYOO-duh." And yes, this is the town with the nationally known Wiener Dog Races. Every spring, dachshunds sprint (or stroll, or stop to sniff something) down a racecourse in Buda City Park while the crowd cheers like it's the Kentucky Derby.
Buda sits just south of Austin on I-35, with a historic downtown, a big city park and a lot of new neighborhoods. Here's what it's actually like to live here.
Buda Neighborhoods and Schools
Buda has a charming historic downtown along Main Street, with older homes and local shops nearby. Around it, there are many newer neighborhoods and master-planned communities, like Sunfield and Garlic Creek, with pools, parks and trails. Some newer communities come with an HOA and a MUD or PID, so it's worth comparing those details side by side.
Buda is served by Hays CISD. The district has grown quickly and periodically rezones campuses as new schools open, so assignments can change. School zones go by address, not by city name. I'll help you check the assigned campuses for any home we look at, and you can compare ratings yourself on TXSchools.gov.

Buda's signature tradition is the Buda Lions Country Fair & Wiener Dog Races, held the last weekend of April in Buda City Park. It kicks off with a pet parade, and then the dachshunds take the track. If you've never watched a wiener dog race, you're missing out on one of life's simple joys. In December, Budafest brings a lighted Christmas parade, fireworks and a snow play area too.
