Living in Copperas Cove, TX: A Local Realtor's Honest Take

Copperas Cove calls itself "The City Built for Family Living," and honestly, it backs that up. It's nestled among five hills in Central Texas, it has a big city park with a fishing pond, and its biggest annual festival is named after rabbits. That's a pretty good sign of what a town cares about.

Copperas Cove is the largest city in Coryell County and sits right on the west side of Fort Hood. Here's what it's actually like to live here.

Copperas Cove Neighborhoods and Schools

Copperas Cove has a little of everything. There are established neighborhoods close to the center of town, newer subdivisions, homes with views of the hills or a golf course, and rural properties with acreage just outside the city. Deer, wild turkey and roadrunners are a normal part of the scenery out there.

Copperas Cove ISD serves the city, and it's a big point of pride locally. The district includes seven elementary schools, two intermediate schools, two junior highs and one high school. School zones go by address, not by city name, and some homes in the surrounding area may be zoned to a neighboring district. I'll help you check the assigned campuses for any home we look at, and you can compare ratings yourself on TXSchools.gov.

Things to Do in Copperas Cove

  • City Park: An 88-acre park with picnic areas, playscapes, sports fields, the city's main public pool and a "duck pond" for fishing.
  • South Park: A paved hike-and-bike trail along a creek, a second public pool and a splash pad.
  • Ogletree Gap Park: Home to the area's original stage stop and Copperas Cove's first post office. A peaceful place to walk and explore some local history.
  • Hills of Cove Golf Course: The city's own 18-hole course, with a driving range and a grill.

Rabbit Fest

Copperas Cove's signature tradition is Rabbit Fest, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce at City Park every May. It's been running for more than 45 years. Over four days there's a carnival and midway, live music, market and food vendors, a car show, fireworks on Saturday night and, on Sunday, actual rabbit shows. Fair warning: your kids may ask for a rabbit on the drive home.

Who Buys in Copperas Cove (and Why)

A lot of buyers in Copperas Cove are connected to Fort Hood, which was renamed from Fort Cavazos back to Fort Hood in 2025. Military families, veterans, civilian employees and contractors like Cove for its location right outside the post, its schools and its price points. I work with veterans and military families, and VA loans and PCS timelines are a normal part of the conversation.

Copperas Cove is also home to people who simply want small-city living in the Hill Country. Central Texas College and Texas A&M University-Central Texas are both nearby on US 190.

Copperas Cove is about 67 miles north of downtown Austin by car, so it's not a daily Austin commute for most people. It's a great fit if your life centers on Fort Hood, Killeen or the Bell County area.
