Living in Elgin, TX: A Local Realtor's Honest Take

Elgin is officially the Sausage Capital of Texas, and I want you to know that up front so you can plan your meals accordingly. This is a town where the big fall festival is a celebration of "all things swine," and where two of the area's best-known barbecue joints have been feeding people for generations.

Elgin sits east of Austin on US 290, with a historic downtown, a weekly farmers market and plenty of room to spread out. Here's what it's actually like to live here.

Elgin Neighborhoods and Schools

Elgin gives you options. Close to downtown, you'll find older homes on established streets within walking distance of Main Street. Around town, there are newer subdivisions with more modern floor plans. And just outside the city, there's land, the kind where you can have a big garden, a few animals, or just a lot of quiet. Some homes outside city limits come with well and septic, which we'll want to look at closely.

Elgin ISD serves the Elgin area, though some nearby addresses can be zoned to neighboring districts. School zones go by address, not by city name. I'll help you check the assigned campuses for any home we look at, and you can compare ratings yourself on TXSchools.gov.

  • Elgin Depot Museum: Housed in the turn-of-the-century Union Depot, with exhibits on how Elgin grew from a railroad town.
  • Elgin Farmers' Market: A year-round weekly market at Veterans' Memorial Park downtown with live local music.

The Hogeye Festival

Elgin's signature tradition is the Hogeye Festival, a free downtown street festival on the fourth Saturday of October. It celebrates community, family and, of course, famous Elgin sausage. There's live music on two stages, handmade arts and crafts, a BBQ pork cook-off, a kids' pet parade and the Pearls Before Swine Art Show. There's also Cow Patty Bingo, where you win based on where a cow does its business. The festival's own motto is "splatter matters." I couldn't make that up if I tried.

Who Buys in Elgin (and Why)

Elgin draws buyers who want more space, a small-town downtown, and often a lower price point than many closer-in Austin suburbs. It's popular with first-time buyers, families, people who want acreage, and folks who work on the east side of the Austin area and don't mind a drive.

Elgin is about 26 miles east of downtown Austin by car. US 290 gets you there, and SH 130 helps if you're heading north or south.
