Living in Killeen, TX: A Local Realtor's Honest Take

Killeen is a town that knows how to welcome people, mostly because so many people arrive here at once. As the home of Fort Hood, it's a place where new neighbors show up every season, and where "Where were you stationed before this?" is a perfectly normal opener at a backyard barbecue.

But Killeen is more than the post. There's a lively downtown event calendar, lakes and waterfalls nearby, and a lot of house for the money. Here's what it's actually like to live here.

Killeen Neighborhoods and Schools

Killeen has a wide range of housing. You'll find established neighborhoods, newer subdivisions, and homes on bigger lots in the surrounding area. Neighboring Harker Heights and Nolanville are close enough that many buyers compare them side by side. Some newer subdivisions come with an HOA, and some older areas don't.

Most of Killeen is in Killeen ISD. School zones go by address, not by city name. I'll help you check the assigned campuses for any home we look at, and you can compare ratings yourself on TXSchools.gov.

Things to Do in Killeen

  • Stillhouse Hollow Lake: Known for clear water and a quieter shoreline. Great for kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing and hiking around Dana Peak Park.
  • Chalk Ridge Falls Park: Wooded trails, a suspension bridge and a waterfall, about 20 minutes away near Belton. Wear shoes you don't mind getting wet.
  • Lions Club Park trail: A paved, mostly flat 2.5-mile trail in the middle of town, good for strollers, runners and dogs.
  • Heritage Oaks Trail: A 3.5-mile trail through open green space and shady woods.
  • Vive Les Arts Theatre: Community theater productions throughout the year.
  • Downtown Killeen events: Motown Downtown, Craw Fest, a Fourth of July music festival and Holiday Under the Stars. There's almost always something on the calendar.

Celebrate Killeen

Killeen's signature tradition is Celebrate Killeen, a multicultural festival held downtown on the last Saturday in April. For more than 40 years, the city has come together for cultural entertainment, food from all over the world, a step show, poetry slams and what the city calls its largest car show. For a town where so many people come from somewhere else, it's a fitting way to celebrate.

Who Buys in Killeen (and Why)

Many Killeen buyers are military families, veterans, Department of the Army civilians and contractors connected to Fort Hood. (If you're coming from out of state, note that the post was renamed Fort Cavazos in 2023 and changed back to Fort Hood in 2025.) Killeen is also home to Texas A&M University-Central Texas and Central Texas College, and many buyers simply like the price point compared with the Austin area.

I work with veterans and military families, so VA loans, PCS timelines and even buying from out of state are familiar territory.

Killeen is about 67 miles north of downtown Austin by car. It's not a typical daily Austin commute, but it's convenient to Fort Hood, Temple, Belton and I-14.
